Why food delivery costs 30% more in India (and where that money actually goes)
Why does a ₹300 cafe meal cost ₹420 on delivery apps? An honest breakdown of restaurant commissions, inflated menu prices, surge packaging, and how to skip the markup.

If you have ever looked at the physical menu card inside a cafe in C-Scheme or Malviya Nagar and then compared it to the price on your phone, you know the feeling: the exact same plate costs ₹40 to ₹90 more on the app.
By the time you reach the checkout screen with packaging fees, convenience fees, GST on fees, and delivery charges, a ₹300 lunch routinely becomes ₹420 or more.
Why does this happen? Is the restaurant overcharging you? Are the delivery platforms greedy? Here is the real economics of modern food delivery in India, explained in plain numbers. What a pickup order costs on Harkara instead is on no delivery fee.
The 25%–35% Commission Squeeze
Commercial delivery aggregators in India (like Zomato and Swiggy) provide incredible logistics, but that logistics network is expensive to run. To fund rider payouts, discounts, and corporate operations, aggregators charge restaurants a commission ranging from 22% to 35% on the total food bill.
For a restaurant operating on thin margins (typically 10%–15% net profit after rent, staff wages, ingredients, and electricity), giving away 30% of top-line revenue means losing money on every single order.
To survive, restaurant owners have only two choices:
- Reduce portion sizes or downgrade ingredients for delivery orders.
- Inflate the listed menu price on the delivery app by 20% to 30% so that after the aggregator deducts its commission, the kitchen still nets its original counter price.
Almost every quality kitchen chooses option 2. That is why menu price inflation on delivery apps is not a secret conspiracy—it is standard restaurant math across India.
The Real Math: Counter Menu vs. Delivery App
Here is an actual breakdown for a typical meal ordered from a premium Jaipur cafe:
| Line Item | Physical Counter / Harkara | Delivery App | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| High-Protein Bowl | ₹300.00 | ₹375.00 | +₹75 (25% listed inflation) |
| Iced Americano | ₹180.00 | ₹225.00 | +₹45 (25% listed inflation) |
| Subtotal | ₹480.00 | ₹600.00 | +₹120.00 |
| Restaurant Packaging | ₹15.00 | ₹40.00 | +₹25 (inflated packaging) |
| Delivery Fee | ₹0.00 (pickup) | ₹49.00 | +₹49 |
| Platform / Convenience Fee | ₹5.00 | ₹11.00 | +₹6 |
| Taxes & GST | ₹24.90 | ₹34.50 | +₹9.60 |
| Total Paid by Diner | ₹519.90 | ₹734.50 | +₹214.60 (+41.3%) |
On a simple two-item lunch, the delivery markup adds over ₹214 (a 41% premium) over the in-store price!
Where Does Your Money Actually Go?
When you pay ₹734.50 on a delivery app:
- The delivery platform keeps ~₹180–₹220 in commissions and fees.
- The delivery rider typically earns ₹25–₹40 per trip.
- The restaurant receives ~₹420–₹450—roughly what they would have earned at their regular dine-in counter price!
Neither the diner nor the restaurant ends up winning. Diners pay substantially more, and restaurants see their brand tarnished when customers feel overcharged.
The Packaging Charge Markup
Another hidden friction point is packaging. When you take food away from a restaurant counter, packaging typically costs ₹10 to ₹15 (the actual cost of biodegradable containers, paper bags, and cutlery).
On delivery platforms, packaging fees are often bumped to ₹30, ₹45, or charged per individual item. Aggregators frequently deduct commission on packaging charges as well, forcing kitchens to inflate packaging to avoid subsidizing boxes.
On Harkara, 100% of the takeaway packaging fee goes directly to the restaurant kitchen with zero deduction.
The Alternative: True Menu Prices & Takeaway Pickup
Food delivery has its place when you are sick, working late, or cannot leave the house. But if you are already commuting home, stepping out from your office in C-Scheme, or heading past the restaurant after a gym session in Malviya Nagar, paying a 40% delivery markup makes little sense.
That is why we built Harkara:
- Real Menu Prices: Exactly what the restaurant charges on its physical dine-in menu card. Zero delivery inflation.
- Transparent Fees: A flat, predictable ₹5 platform fee per order. No percentage commissions squeezed out of the kitchen.
- Kitchen Declarations: Clear declarations of cooking oil, flour, and dairy, along with calorie and protein estimates for every dish.
- Order Ahead for Pickup: Your food is freshly prepared as you approach, hot and packaged the minute you walk in.
You get great food from your favorite neighborhood kitchens, pay the honest menu price, and save ₹150–₹300 on every meal.
